A portrait is at heart a collaborative process between artist and sitter. The pose, mood, colour scheme and clothing are of utmost importance to the overall design of the painting. Taking the time to consider this on the first sitting is essential. Other items significant to the sitter - such as books, flowers, jewellery, musical instruments, etc. - may be included later on; and deciding what to include, and what these things mean, is all part of the fun.
Larger paintings may sometimes require more sittings. We will always start with a preparatory drawing and we are often able to finish the painting of clothes and other effects by using a lay figure (or mannequin) which takes away some of the unnecessary strain from the sitter.
