For us it's important to work from life wherever possible. Plenty of modern painters use photography, and after a photoshoot wave their clients goodbye until the painting is finished. Working from life, on the other hand, amplifies the essence of the sitter. Over the course of several sittings it's not uncommon for people to reveal different sides to their personality. A painting is more interesting, we believe, if these complexities are acknowledged; it lends both pathos and inner beauty to the finished portrait, and this can only be done through life sittings.
Photography is also prone to distortion - as anybody who's ever had an unflattering snapshot will surely testify. A drawing - based on an encounter with the sitter over time - is much truer to what the mind sees. This is how we see it. Which is not not say that a drawing will be perfect, it's just that a drawing will be imperfect in a more interesting way. It holds a different kind of truth.
