Young sitters often make the best subjects, with their favourite toys, their whimsical clothes, and  their relative freedom from self-consciousness

Young Sitters

"All the gestures of children
are graceful”

Sir Joshua Reynolds

01 July 2024

Painting young sitters is a joy and it is amazing how quickly children change. As parents ourselves, we well understand the profound nature of capturing fleeting youth. Our boys have both been painted many times and our portraits of them remain our most prized positions.

Perhaps surprisingly, younger sitters are often incredibly dedicated sitters and their lack of self-consciousness can also make them the best subjects. Some love to dress up, which is a wonderful thing to paint. But they all find the experience interesting and love to see the painting coming to life before their eyes.
